Multi-scale uncertainty quantification in geostatistical seismic inversion
Geostatistical seismic inversion is commonly used to infer the spatial
distribution of the subsurface petro-elastic properties by perturbing the model
parameter space through iterative stochastic sequential
simulations/co-simulations. The spatial uncertainty of the inferred
petro-elastic properties is represented with the updated a posteriori variance
from an ensemble of the simulated realizations. Within this setting, the
large-scale geological (metaparameters) used to generate the petro-elastic
realizations, such as the spatial correlation model and the global a priori
distribution of the properties of interest, are assumed to be known and
stationary for the entire inversion domain. This assumption leads to
underestimation of the uncertainty associated with the inverted models. We
propose a practical framework to quantify uncertainty of the large-scale
geological parameters in seismic inversion. The framework couples
geostatistical seismic inversion with a stochastic adaptive sampling and
Bayesian inference of the metaparameters to provide a more accurate and
realistic prediction of uncertainty not restricted by heavy assumptions on
large-scale geological parameters. The proposed framework is illustrated with
both synthetic and real case studies. The results show the ability retrieve
more reliable acoustic impedance models with a more adequate uncertainty spread
when compared with conventional geostatistical seismic inversion techniques.
The proposed approach separately account for geological uncertainty at
large-scale (metaparameters) and local scale (trace-by-trace inversion)
Estimação de intervalos postmortem usando metilação do DNA
Estimation of a corpse’s time of death is an absolute crucial part of many forensic cases. An accurate time placement in a case’s sequence of events is information that can create a suspect list or exempt suspects from it, deeply altering an entire case. Currently, postmortem intervals and time of death is assessed through several physical, metabolic and physiochemical evaluations during autopsy. These evaluations carry strengths, weaknesses and variations, and a more stable and robust procedure would be invaluable to the advancement of forensic sciences. One of the most recent focus for such a possible procedure relies in one of the epigenetic regulations of DNA, the addition of a methyl group to certain cytosines, known as DNA methylation. DNA methylation regulates many aspects of the genome, from silencing tissue specific genes, non-coding sections of DNA, up to tissue specialization and working as a stable long-term response to the environment. This work is a review on procedures, potential biomarkers, possible viability and obstacles in the way of using this regulatory modification of the considerably stable port-mortem DNAA estimativa do tempo de morte de um cadáver é uma parte absolutamente crucial de muitos casos forense.
A synthesis of logic and bio-inspired techniques in the design of dependable systems
Much of the development of model-based design and dependability analysis in the design of dependable systems, including software intensive systems, can be attributed to the application of advances in formal logic and its application to fault forecasting and verification of systems. In parallel, work on bio-inspired technologies has shown potential for the evolutionary design of engineering systems via automated exploration of potentially large design spaces. We have not yet seen the emergence of a design paradigm that effectively combines these two techniques, schematically founded on the two pillars of formal logic and biology, from the early stages of, and throughout, the design lifecycle. Such a design paradigm would apply these techniques synergistically and systematically to enable optimal refinement of new designs which can be driven effectively by dependability requirements. The paper sketches such a model-centric paradigm for the design of dependable systems, presented in the scope of the HiP-HOPS tool and technique, that brings these technologies together to realise their combined potential benefits. The paper begins by identifying current challenges in model-based safety assessment and then overviews the use of meta-heuristics at various stages of the design lifecycle covering topics that span from allocation of dependability requirements, through dependability analysis, to multi-objective optimisation of system architectures and maintenance schedules
do espanhol e português.
Smart Cities Initiative: how to foster a quick transition towards local sustainable energy systems
The European Commission has recently launched the Smart Cities Initiative to demonstrate and disseminate how to foster a quick transition towards local sustainable energy systems. Within this initiative, the three main challenges faced by pioneering cities, are to reduce or modify the demand for energy services, to improve the uptake of energy efficient technologies and to improve the uptake of renewables in the urban environment. We find that enough resources will need to be provided to a significant number of pioneering cities, and propose that the initiative would allocate these resources through project competition, rewarding innovation, ambition and performance, which have been ingredients of success at Member State level.Smart Cities; sustainable local energy systems; city authority incentives; EU energy policy

An illustrated catalogue of the types of Blephariceridae (Diptera) in the collection of Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil
Kelloggina Williston, 1907 is one of the least studied Blephariceridae genera in the world, despite being the most diverse in the Neotropics with 34 species. We provide a catalogue with the 14 nominal species of the genus described by Lane and d’Andretta from the Southeastern Region of Brazil, of which the type-specimens are deposited at the Diptera Collection of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. There are 60 specimens deposited at this museum, including male holotypes of 14 species and females “allotypes” (paratypes) for seven species. We include male diagnoses and photographs of the holotypes of all species
